Volunteer With Us

Information for Prospective Volunteers

Since its inception in 1966, Hubbards Sailing Club has been a positive outlet for local youth and a place to Teach Life Skills Through Sailing. We rely on community volunteers to operate the Club. Are you interested in volunteering with us?

Our Story

The history of our Club stretches back to 1966 when the Hubbards Yacht Club (HYC) was founded by a group of permanent and part-time residents of Hubbards, whose goal was to create a constructive outlet for the energies and spare time of children. The HYC launched its first sailing season on July 15, 1967 in Hubbards Cove. Taking root quickly, HYC became a charter member of the Canadian Yachting Association in early 1968.

In 2012, the club rebranded as the Hubbards Sailing Club (HSC) to better reflect our programming and core values. With a new facility further down the cove, and an emphasis on both learning to sail and racing, HSC was well-positioned as a solid contributor to both our community and sailing in Nova Scotia for years to come.

In 2017, the club celebrated 50 years and averaged approximately 70 youth sailors per week enrolled in programs. Fast forward to today, and our highly effective home-grown team, of 12 coaches, continues to develop talented sailors in the Optimist, 420 and Laser classes. With up to 80+ sailors daily, we provide hours of instruction, fun, life skills, and lifelong memories for children of Hubbards and nearby communities.
