Not only do we produce high-quality, competitive athletes, we also focus on the development of each individual sailor as they become young adults. There is a sense of community and belonging that makes HSC unique. As the Head Coach you are responsible for mentoring sailors and other coaches as they develop. The successful applicant must be a role model for youth and represent HSC in the greater sailing community. 

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual with a passion for both sailing and working with young people.  Successful applicants will require strong communication and organizational skills. HSC delivers the CANSail program from Wetfeet to CANSail 6. Our busiest weeks will see upwards of 70 sailors at the club and 12 coaches on staff.

Reports to:  Head Coach

Sailing season

  • Spring, May & June (part-time)
  • Summer, July & August (full time)
  • Fall, September & October (part-time)

Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications, in accordance with Sail Nova Scotia wage guidelines. 

 

Qualifications:

  • A mature individual with a positive “can do” attitude with the ability to act as a positive role model and ambassador for the Hubbards Sailing Club.
  • A demonstrated passion for sailing; race experience is considered an asset
  • Minimum CANSail Instructor levels as required by Sail Canada
  • A working knowledge of current Sail NS and CANSail LTS program structure and operations 
  • A working knowledge of 420's, Optis, Lasers, coach boats and their maintenance 
  • Ability to operate a coach boat in an appropriate and safe manner
  • VHF / RCOC certification 
  • Fully insured with Sail Canada
  • Valid PCOC Card - boat operators card
  • First Aid:  Any national program approved by the CANSail Insurance Policy
  • Additional certification would be considered an asset
  • Successful Police Background Check Vulnerable Sector Screening

 

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Deliver a quality sport experience for participants while ensuring their safety both on and off the water.
  2. Liaise between key stakeholders – sailing school participants, parents, and Head Coach.
  3. Participate in Hubbards Sailing Club events as required and promote HSC in the community.
  4. Ensure that all equipment (sailboats, coach boats, radios, etc.) is kept in good and safe working order.



 

Specific Responsibilities: 

  • Reporting directly to the Head Coach and working under the direction of the HSC LTS Director
  • Supervision and leadership of introductory-level sailors in on-the-water & shore-side instruction and physical fitness/fun-games activities
  • Preparing land and on-water lessons for classes while maintaining the highest level of CANSail standards
  • Working closely with other instructors to coordinate CANSail  activities with other sailing school programming 
  • Recording and maintaining records of student progression
  • Following all safety plans as outlined in the HSC Emergency Action Plan, provide first aid when necessary, and document incidents in a timely manner
  • Acting as a positive role model who leads youth sailors in their sailing development
  • Maintaining club facilities to a high standard and all equipment in good and safe working order
  • Assisting at all HSC sponsored events (e.g. Open House, Island Day, Closing BBQ & Awards, etc.) as required
  • Assisting at local regattas as applicable
  • Bringing participant issues or problems to the Head Coach before potential problems escalate
  • Assisting in the pre-season opening of the club including SailAll and preparation of the sailboats, coach boats, equipment, and property for the season (if available)
  • Assisting in post-season closing of the club and storing of the sailboats, coach boats, equipment, and property for the season (if available)
  • Performing other duties as required
